La Jolla

La Jolla, occupying 7 miles (11 km) of curving coastline along the Pacific Ocean, is known as Jewel by the Sea, and is located along the western edge of the north coastal region of the City of San Diego.

La Jolla encompasses approximately 5,718 acres acres of land and there are approximate 31,000 people living in the neighborhood. The median age is 53.6. There are 2.26 persons per household. The annual median household income was approximately $140,000. There are approximately 16,000 housing unites in the neighborhood and vacancy rate is 14.3%.

La Jolla is bounded on the north by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD); on the east by Gilman Drive, the University community and Interstate 5; on the south by the community of Pacific Beach; and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. 

The most compelling geographical highlight of La Jolla is its ocean front, with alternating rugged and sandy coastline that serves as habitat for many wild seal congregations. Popular beaches and coastal access points include:

The University of California San Diego is the center of higher education in La Jolla. Public schools include La Jolla High School, Muirlands Middle School, La Jolla Elementary, Torrey Pines Elementary, Bird Rock Elementary and charted Preuss School.
